My back porch Goldilocks Grill

I love this grill - It is just right!!! The size is perfect for cooking for 2 or for a party of 10. The adjustable second shelf is great. The new controller has WiFire, Super Smoke, the D2 decoupled drive system allows it recover quickly, and boy can it reverse sear. When it gets rocking sounds ...

Buyer Beware.

Love the Grill cooks great food (5 out of 5 stars) but like many other Ironwood and Timberline owners I found out the hard way that the warranty apparently does not cover the barrel if you cook on it more than a couple times. After a month of owning this grill the protective paint has started to det...

'Underwhelmed' is probably the best description

I have owned my Ironwood 885 for almost 3 years. It is operating as designed with no major issues that many other reviews have mentioned. There have never been any network issues or structural/finish issues (no paint flaking, etc.), and for the most part, no operational issues. I'm just overall underwhelmed with its performance now that I have had opportunities to compare it to other pellet grills of the similar design. (no, I'm not comparing a pellet grill with a true 'stick burner/offset') I've cooked with true wood burning/smoking prior to getting the Ironwood. The taste and flavour can't really be matched (nor did I expect it to be), however I wanted the ease and automated control of a programmable pellet grill, and "meet in the middle" for 'wood-fired'. This is where it under performs. As far as the technology and automatic control goes, it does the job. However, there is very little actual 'wood-fried' flavour and I have now spent a few years trying different temperatures, different pellet fuel (yes Traeger brand pellets as well), "super-smoke" mode (which makes little to no difference), and varying timeframes to no avail. Sure, I can add an aftermarket 'smoke tube' to burn in the chamber to add smoke flavour, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of a pellet grill/smoker?? It now becomes an expensive outdoor oven with a smoke tube. This is where I'm at however, and, shouldn't be the case. Lastly, the temperature sensor/control of the cooking chamber has never been accurate, on average running about 20C lower than the display reads. There is a calibration for the temperature probes, but none for the built-in sensor. Using numerous secondary thermometers (INLCUDING a Meater Probe owned by Traeger themselves) The temperature on those thermometers is 20C lower than then Ironwood says. Hence, you must set and run the Ironwood at approx. 20C higher to get the chamber temperature you desire. This is especially problematic if you want to run at 225C (the maximum temp Super Smoke will work) but have to set it at 245C in order to get real-world 225C. Setting it at 245C disables Super Smoke, while on the other end, if you set it at 225C the real-world temp is about 200C, resulting in increasing cooking times significantly. So yes, while it is functional, it's problematic, and after researching online there is no known fix (it's long out of warranty but has been a consistent problem since day one.) All in all, I enjoy the look, build, and finish of the unit. It's well-built, just quite underwhelming in performance when compared to the same cooks side-by-side with a close competitor, Reqtec. For the high price, I would say it's below-average, and would not buy Traeger again. Evaluated against a friend's dozens and dozens of cooks over the same time period, side by side on his Reqtec 700, if I had to do it again I would buy a Reqtec which is of similar build quality, wifi technology, achieves closer to a true wood fired smoker and, with accurate temps. Unfortunately, I'm not going to recoup the money spent in reselling the Ironwood, in order for me to switch at this point.

We bought the Ironwood 885 for a Christmas gift for ourselves! We've used it so many times since then and we are very impressed with the results! Wood fired food is just excellent. This smoker is so easy to use and use friendly. Along with the app and all the recipes, it's a no brainer to purchase a traeger.

I have used it twice since purchasing it. First time was the thanksgiving turkey, came out great. Next time was chicken thighs, great flavor and juicy. I had the Silverton model before this, I do miss all the under storage that was on that model. Overall, very happy with my purchase.

Word on the street is that the ironwood line is traegers strongest performing cooking platform. After owning an older model the ironwood checks off many things that are extremely practical. All I can see is well done!

Smoker works like a charm, but have had zero luck with the WIFI functionality, which was half the reason to shop Traeger.

Welcome to the "Dark Side"

First time going to the dark side (pellet grill). Always been a traditional/lump charcoal ceramic grill guy....a real bbq snob. After years of warranty issues on 2 different ceramic GD grills and the company ghosting me, I decided to try the Traeger. At first I was a little put off by just the "mechanacian" , but now, my wife and I have been very impressed with the results, and the ease of use. The interface with setting up grill temps, food temps, the app itself etc have been very user friendly. We felt like pro's with the new tech right out of the gate. Very happy with everything so far.

Really enjoying it, and getting better at it, as I smoke more meats. Turkey breast and chicken wings are a favourite, due to my restrictive diet
